Boosting the smart city: 70 professionals participate in the session “Business participation in the City Intelligence Lab”.

More than 70 professionals from private companies, the Administration and the Polytechnic University of Madrid met on Friday, April 25 at the ETSI Telecommunication of the UPM in the framework of the session “Participation of companies in the City Intelligence Laboratory”. The objective of the same is to establish collaboration mechanisms between the Madrid City Council, the University and the private sector to participate in the definition and governance of the IoT model of the city of Madrid and to face all the challenges and the design of smart urban spaces.
On the occasion of the recent signing of the collaboration agreement between the Madrid City Council and the Polytechnic University of Madrid for the application of technologies related to smart cities in municipal and city services in the period 2024-2028, four permanent working groups have been formed.
- IoT and interoperability for the city 5.0
- 5G to promote the transition to this technology
- Cybersecurity, as a cornerstone of all connected activity.
- Data and Artificial Intelligence, also with cross-cutting capabilities.
The flagship for working together in all these actions is the new City Intelligence Laboratory, which is being launched to integrate, in addition to the IoTMADLab, the 6G City of Madrid laboratory, a presence of staff from the permanent groups and the center of excellence and data office, the result of the agreement with the FEMP for the EDINT project.
In addition, since 2025 the organization of activities includes the development of challenges, designed to exploit the ability to solve problems posed by the different municipal technical services. To face them, always through these permanent groups, the participation of other departments of any public or private university or business school in Madrid is foreseen, and the collaboration of companies as accelerators of the answers to the challenges is also envisaged.
As foreseen in the strategy in this area of public-private collaboration, the participation of companies is now articulated so that they can contribute to a more agile resolution of these challenges and so that the responses are even more precise. Different intensities and degrees of collaboration, and even forms of participation, are envisaged.
For this reason, the session “Participation of companies in the City Intelligence Lab” was held, with the participation of Fernando de Pablo, General Director of the Digital Office of the Madrid City Council, Manuel Sierra, Director of the ETSI Telecommunications at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Fernando Álvarez, Deputy Director of Digital Transformation in the Digital Office of the Madrid City Council, and Asunción Santamaría, director of IoTMADLab.
